Community Services Program
The obstacles associated with aging and disabilities can lead to isolation, loss of independence, unfulfilled potential and diminished quality of life. For these clients transportation is more than a ride—it means mobility and a degree of independence. The American Red Cross provides non-emergency van transportation for persons who need medical attention and have no other means of transport. The American Red Cross “door-to-door” service operates primarily to and from the Texas Medical Center. Alternate destinations are serviced based on availability of drivers and vehicles.
The American Red Cross Community Services Transportation program operates through funding from the United Way of Texas Gulf Coast, donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Passengers utilizing this service pay no fee. Because the program operates through the generosity of local donors, capacity is limited.
To qualify for the program’s service, the client must be referred by a social worker or outpatient care staff at the facility to which he or she is being transported.
The community services program is operated primarily with volunteer drivers, and clients are picked up in groups. Consequently, Red Cross cannot guarantee appointment times. However, every effort is made to accommodate the clients’ schedules. Passengers are picked up between 8:45 am and 11:00 am. Only one escort may accompany a passenger.
Unless otherwise noted, Red Cross transportation services require that reservations be made at least 24 hours prior to any pick-up.
Remember –you can reserve your transportation appointment as much as 30 days in advance.
